Brabus Super C-Class W204: BULLIT with 720hp & 1320Nm!

Famed Mercedes-Benz tuner and customiser, BRABUS, has transplanted its ultra-hyper SV 12 S Biturbo engine into the latest W204 C-Class resulting a super high performance sedan called BULLIT.

Over the past three decades BRABUS has perfected the art of transplanting large and extremely powerful engines into the bodies of small cars. That path led to numerous world records and entries into the Guinness Book of World Records. The BRABUS BULLIT, built in small-series production based on the new Mercedes C-Class sedan, celebrates its world debut at the Frankfurt International Motor Show 2007 as the ultimate wolf in sheep’s clothing.

At the heart of this super saloon BRABUS placed an engine originally designed for the world’s fastest sedan, the BRABUS ROCKET. The implantation of the 6.3L powerhouse into the confines of the W 204 series body is yet more proof for the superiority of BRABUS know-how.

The BRABUS SV12 S Biturbo engine is produced entirely in-house in the state-of-the-art BRABUS engine building shop. Displacement increase to 6.3L with special crankshaft plus longer stroke, enlarged cylinder bore with corresponding larger pistons. Both cylinder heads feature flow-optimized ports and special camshafts. Two high-performance turbochargers with special exhaust manifolds; more efficient intercooling system and BRABUS stainless-steel high-performance exhaust system with low-back-pressure metal catalysts. Newly programmed mapping for engine electronics and on-board diagnostics made these all possible.

The turbocharged twelve-cylinder engine – lubricated like all BRABUS high-performance engines with ARAL Synthetic motor oil – delivers 730ps (720hp) / 537kW of superlative power and 1,320Nm (974 lb-ft) of superlative peak torque. The latter is limited electronically in-car to 1,100Nm (811 lb-ft).

Power is transferred to the rear wheels via a massively modified five-speed automatic transmission and a BRABUS rear locking differential with a locking rate of up to 40 percent. It is available with two different final drive ratios.

The performance figures for the BRABUS BULLIT is ultimate in its class: The executive rocket sprints from 0 – 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 3.9 seconds, reaches 200 km/h (124 mph) after just 10.49 seconds and shatters the 300-km/h (186 mph) barrier after a mere 24.5 seconds. Top speed is more than 360 km/h (224 mph). There are only a very few super sports cars in the world that can hope to match these numbers.

Such performance places special demands on aerodynamic properties, suspension and brakes. Its extra-muscular body was optimized for runs beyond 300 km/h (186mph) in the wind tunnel. Those aggressive arches make room for especially wide BRABUS wheels and YOKOHAMA ADVAN high-performance tyres. The BULLIT runs on size 9.5Jx19 BRABUS Monoblock S light-alloy wheels and size 265/30 ZR 19 tyres on the steering axle. The rear axle features 10Jx19 wheels with size 285/30 ZR 19 tyres.

The suspension too was custom-developed to handle super-power and the weight of the twin-turbo V12 engine. The sporty yet comfortable height-adjustable BRABUS coil-over suspension features ten selectable settings each for bound and rebound, and ensures safe handling in all driving situations. Sport sway bars reduce body roll during fast cornering to a minimum.

The BRABUS high-performance brake system can handle even the most extreme stress. It features 12-piston aluminium fixed calipers on the front axle that grip vented and grooved 380 x 37 mm (15 x 1.46 inches) brake discs. The rear axle stops with 360 x 28 mm (14.2 x 1.1 inches) discs and six-piston aluminium fixed calipers.

Brabus 30th Anniversary

On occasion of its 30th anniversary, BRABUS will present an automotive ‘wolf in sheep’s clothing” at the Frankfurt International Auto Show IAA 2007. Rumoured to be a tuned-up W204 C-Class, this will be the fastest vehicle in its segment. The debut will be accompanied by the launch of the newly designed BRABUS website at http://www.brabus.com/.

Bodo Buschmann founded BRABUS back in 1977. 30 years later, BRABUS is the world’s largest independent automobile tuner. It is considered a car manufacturer by the German Federal Motor Vehicle Registration Agency (Kraftfahrtbundesamt). What started back in 1984 with a Mercedes 190 equipped with a V8 engine, led eventually to the BRABUS E V12 that in 1996 set a new world record for fastest street-legal sedan in the Guinness Book of World Records with a top speed of 330 km/h (205 mph). Today that same record is held by the BRABUS ROCKET with a top speed of 365.7 km/h (227.2 mph).

The idea of dropping an immensely powerful engine into the engine bay of a sedan with almost indiscernible exterior modifications now reaches its latest pinnacle with the debut of a new ‘wolf in sheep’s clothing.’ The latest BRABUS special model based on the latest Mercedes-Benz C-Class delivers performance that only a very few of the world’s super sports cars can match.

Since 1997 some ten million auto enthusiasts have visited the continually updated BRABUS website. Now a completely redesigned website goes online at http://www.brabus.com/. Users can find loads of interesting information on BRABUS, its 30-year history and the extensive BRABUS product lineup. An interactive virtual tour also offers glimpses behind the scenes of the dream factory in Bottrop.

The BRABUS Art Club is another new feature of the online presence of BRABUS. For the inauguration, the club will feature a photo editing contest. Online visitors can choose from various BRABUS models and then render these models in scenery they can design. An international jury will select the best of these art works that will be presented on the new BRABUS website and winners will be awarded prizes.

For the new C280 and C350 models BRABUS offers its BRABUS outbored engine. By installing a special crankshaft and larger pistons displacement is increased to 4.0L. Crucially, the four-valve cylinder heads are optimized for gas flow, and fitted with special camshafts. The conversion further includes a stainless-steel high-performance exhaust system with metal catalysts, and newly programmed engine electronics.

The impressive results of the conversion are a maximum power output of 332 hp/244 kW and a peak torque of 420Nm at 4200 rpm. This uprated C-Class sprints to 100km/h in just 5.9 seconds, on the way to a top speed of 275 km/h.

BRABUS stainless-steel quad sport exhaust systems are available for all engine variants. More dynamics for the new C-Class also come from custom-tailored BRABUS tyre/wheel combinations with diameters of 17, 18, 19 and 20 inches and corresponding BRABUS sport suspensions, lowering kits and sport sway bars. The largest wheels for the new C-Class are BRABUS Monoblock VI, E and S light-alloy wheels in size 9Jx20 front and back, fitted with tyres sizes of 235/30 ZR20 in front and 265/25 ZR20 on the rear axle.

The BRABUS design team also went into the wind tunnel to develop aerodynamic-enhancement components that not only look great but also offer maximum aerodynamic efficiency. The sporty styled BRABUS front spoiler lends the C-Class a more sporty appearance with its generously dimensioned air inlets for improved supply of cooling air for radiators and front brakes. It also minimizes lift on the front axle, thus improving directional stability at high speeds. Four integrated foglights further optimize active safety. BRABUS offers a three-piece rear spoiler that serves as an aerodynamic foil on the boot lip, apart from enhancing that purposeful look.
The bottom rear apron wrap around a pair of twin tail pipes which are interspersed with a good-looking aerodynamic diffuser with what looks like a central blizzard light.

BRABUS B63 S Tuning

Famous Mercedes-Benz tuner, BRABUS now offers even more power for all Mercedes 63 AMG models: its B63 S engine tuning, which boosts power output of the high-revving 6.2-liter V8 to 550 hp / 404 kW and peak torque to 650 Nm. With a sprint time from rest to 100 km/h in just 4.3 seconds and a top speed of 330 km/h, a CLS 63 AMG with B63 S tuning turns in performance worthy of a true super sports car.

The BRABUS power kit comprises newly programmed engine electronics with special mapping for injection and ignition. But that's not all: The intake side features a sport air filter for improved supply of combustion air. The exhaust side features high-performance metal catalysts with low back pressure that also ensure that the tuned V8 engine meets stringent EURO IV emission limits. In order to transfer the increased power to the road with minimum slip, BRABUS recommends the BRABUS locking differential for all Mercedes 63 models with rear wheel drive. The diff lock has a locking rate of up to 40%.

The BRABUS B63 S performance kit is available for all Mercedes 63 AMG models. With 550hp / 404 kW the ML 63 accelerates in 4.9 seconds from 0-100 km/h and reaches a top speed of 275 km/h in combination with the BRABUS Vmax unit.

This extraordinary performance represents a good argument for modifications to tyres, suspension and brakes. Depending on the Mercedes 63 AMG model in question BRABUS offers custom-tailored tyre/wheel combinations up to size 11Jx23 with tyres up to 315/25R 23. To further improve the already excellent handling characteristics BRABUS has developed a control module for the ABC suspensions that lowers the ride height by some 20 millimeters. BRABUS sport stabilizers reduce body roll and optimise turn-in.

BRABUS SV12 S Biturbo Coupe with 730hp and 1320Nm!

With the SV12 S Biturbo Coupe, BRABUS presents the world's fastest and most powerful coupe. Its highlights are 730hp/537 kW of power, 1,320Nm of torque and a top speed of 340km/h!

At the heart of this exclusive automobile is the BRABUS SV12 S Biturbo engine. It is based on the turbocharged Mercedes-Benz CL 600's twelve-cylinder and represents the most powerful street-legal V12 motor in the world. Installing a special BRABUS crankshaft with longer stroke, combined with a bigger bore and correspondingly resized forged pistons, increases displacement from 5.5 to 6.3L. Further engine modifications also include precision machining the cylinder heads and fitting them with four special camshafts.

In addition, the engine peripherals are also modified extensively. The modifications include special exhaust manifolds, two larger turbochargers, a high-efficiency intercooler and a high performance exhaust system with metal catalysts plus low back pressure. Extensive bench tests determined the new programming for the engine electronics that not only maximizes horsepower but also ensures that the engine meets stringent Euro IV emission limits.

Performance figures of the BRABUS SV12 S Biturbo displacement engine speak volumes: A rated power output of 730 hp/537 kW at 5,100 rpm is just as extraordinary as a peak torque of 1,320 Nm at just 2,100 rpm! On the road, peak torque is limited electronically to 1,100 Nm. Power is transferred to the rear wheels via a modified five-speed automatic transmission. An optionally available BRABUS locking differential optimizes traction. All BRABUS drive train elements are operated with ARAL high-performance lubricants.

The BRABUS S V12 S Biturbo coupe is not just the most powerful; it is also the fastest street-legal of its kind. It rockets from standstill to 100km/h in 4.0 secs, reaches 200km/h after just 11.9seconds and continues to sprint to an electronically limited top speed of 340km/h.

The enormous performance of the BRABUS SV12 S Biturbo coupe places exceptionally high demands on the aerodynamic-enhancement parts, which thankfully were developed in a wind tunnel. The sophisticated shape of the BRABUS front apron reduces lift on the front axle and improves engine and front brake cooling due to its large air inlet. Integrated fog lamps and high beams lend the car a characteristic appearance and further improve active safety by optimizing illumination of the road.

The BRABUS rocker panels optimize the airflow along the sides and feature integrated entrance lights for safe entering and exiting of the vehicle in the dark. The BRABUS rear apron sports custom-tailored cut-outs for the BRABUS quad-sport exhaust. Three LED lights integrated into the apron are also activated via the keyless fob. An understated rear spoiler rounds out the sophisticated BRABUS aerodynamics concept, and reduces lift on the rearaxle for further improved directional stability at high speeds.

The enormous performance of the BRABUS SV12 S Biturbo coupe is kept safely in check at all times, thanks to custom-tailored solutions for tyres, suspension and brakes. Among them are BRABUS Monoblock light-alloy wheels with diameters of 18, 19, 20 or 21 inches. The largest tyre/wheel combination features BRABUS Monoblock VI and E wheels in sizes 9Jx21 in front and 10.5Jx21 on the rear axle. The largest corresponding tyres are size 265/30 ZR21 in front and size 295/30 ZR21 in the rear.

BRABUS recommends Pirelli and YOKOHAMA high-performance tyres. The BRABUS module for the standard ABC suspension is specifically calibrated to these high-performance tyres, and lowers the ride height by some 25 millimeters. For further optimized active safety the BRABUS SV12 S Biturbo coupe can be equipped with the BRABUS high-performance brake system. Maximum fade-free stopping power is provided on the front axle by 380 x 36 millimeter discs and 12-piston aluminium fixed calipers. The rear features 355 x 28 millimeter discs and 6-piston aluminum fixed calipers.

BRABUS also fulfills any requests imaginable when it comes to exclusive interior options. The list of products ranges from scuff plates with illuminated BRABUS logo or an ergonomically shaped sport steering wheel to an exclusive customized interior crafted from soft yet durable BRABUS Mastik leather and the finest Alcantara.

The BRABUS SV12 S Biturbo coupe can be ordered as a complete car or can be built based on a current CL600 model. The BRABUS model range, from the entry level Premier Line to highest range of high performance vehicles imported from the Brabus factory in Germany and Mercedes-Benz individualization services are available at BRABUS Bangsar KL Centre, BRABUS Penang Centre and BRABUS PJ Centre in Malaysia.

Brabus CLS B7 Test Drive

By Dr Long

Mention the word coupe, a two-door sedan comes to mind. That is…until 2004 when DaimlerChrysler threw a spanner in the works by introducing a 4-door coupe in the form of Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class. Come to think of it, they had actually done this before – blurring the lines of distinction of a body form – when they tagged their C-Class hatchback a coupe!

Well, so much for nomenclature. Imagine the enthusiasm when Naza-Brabus invited me to review their tuned and kitted version: the CLS B7. Brabus is after all a respectable tuning house with a good 29 years of expertise re-working on numerous 3-pointed stars and counting...

This stunning Mercedes-Benz C219 shares the same 2854mm E-Class’ wheelbase, albeit with longer overhangs - especially at the front – making it longer by about 105mm. The CLS is also wider, for both tracks and body making it visually larger than the W211.
Looking sleek and menacing in black, the B7’s flared front wheel arches runs backwards into a distinctive band just below the beltline, culminating in a very shapely arc to the rear. Within the wheel arches lurks massive Brabus Monoblock VI dual-spoke design alloys: 8.5J x 19”. Chromed window surrounds – making a comeback in most new MB models – lends a highlight of classy elegance to the roof-window arch and beltline. Interiorly, the dashboard looks more British than Teutonic, with a big chunk of ‘wood’ splashed across it. Instruments panel looks like they come right off the E-Class production line save for the bulging pods layout with distinctive chrome rings. Similarly, parts like the Thermotronic A/C controls, power windows’ switches, column stalks, dash buttons, radio-CD, door handles and ashtrays are very familiar looking too. Conversely, the new-design four spoke steering wheel goes into the E-Class facelift.

Window sills are higher than the ‘normal’ Mercedes saloons, but it’s nowhere claustrophobic inside, even with the lower ceiling. Seating position is low, snug and comfortable. My burly frame also fitted in the rear rather well, despite being less spacious than the E-Class. Ingress and egress to the rear – which sits only two – may be hindered by the sloping door aperture. Boot is also less capacious than the W211 Brabus K4 (500 vs. 530litres); obviously style dictating form over function.

Popping up the shapely bonnet revealed a very neat engine cover, highlighted by a racing-red V-shape border with a central ‘B’ insignia and Brabus B7 inscriptions bilaterally. Nestled underneath is Mercedes’ M272 engine in V6 configuration with a displacement of 3498cc, churning out 287bhp and 360Nm (as opposed to the standard 272bhp/350Nm). The same motor can be found in the SLK350, S350, R350 as well as the new ML350. One notable ‘relic’ in this new generation Merc is the SBC brake module plus its paraphernalia. Surprisingly still standard equipment here, despite some patchy reliability issues associated with this electro-hydraulic brake system in the W211s.

Firing up the ignition button on the gear knob, the normally aspirated quad-cam 24-valves motor comes alive with a purr. Run this V6 along with the superbly smooth 7-G Tronic auto ‘box, the engine’s sporty note – almost guttural but somewhat muted – is simply lovely as it stretches past the 6000 rpm mark. The Brabus Sports exhaust sounded quite Porsche-like with its deep-bassy growls. But after a long drive, it’s decidedly better NOT to have this ‘show-off’ quad exhaust ports in place of the OE bi-ovals, as these mufflers can boomingly tired out your eardrums!

The engine is responsive and willing. It pushes meaningfully from 2000rpm onwards, not due any inherent lag from the powerplant but likely due to the inertia of this 1.75 tonne beast. Gun it past 2500rpm (and that’s no sweat) you get dollops of big V6 torque, resulting in a broad band of effortless acceleration. Power delivery is delightfully smooth with the ever affable RWD dynamics a plus point. I call this power-refinement-comfort combo. As such, speed just creeps up on you – before you know it, the speedometer is about the only thing that tells you’re doing high three digits speed.

Despite its misleading size, the car handles well in quick lane-changes, not as nimble as say a C-Class but still quite agile. It is well planted tackling sweeping bends and also very composed doing high speed highway exits. The ‘Comfort’ and ‘Sport’ settings of the Airmatic DC semi-active air suspension works beautifully. In ‘C’ mode there are more suspension travel, hence the ride is suppler and better damped. Switching over to ‘S’ mode, I could feel the steering weigh-up as well as a lowering of ride height plus the dampers becoming tauter.
In whichever drive mode, the CLS’ steering always feedback as noticeably more precise and sharper than the E-Class’ rack. Could this be the ‘Direct Control’ steering in the facelift W211? Braking performance is of course no issue here - as the SBC has always been – with this 4-door coupe always stable, even under hard braking.

The carpet-ride and quiet comfort is typically Benz – with maybe just a tad more firmness than the E-Class. Even running on sizeable 255/40 ZR19 Continentals at all corners, the ride is still unmistakably Mercedes – good for smooth and supple wafting over road surface irregularities, even over some nasty lumps and bumps.

To sum it up, the Brabus CLS B7 is a glamourised E350 in wolf’s clothing. It is pretty exclusive, looks dynamic and very sporty. For those who yearns for something different - mixing the sleek silhouette of the CL or a CLK coupe plus the practicality of four doors - look no further…only if you have closed to a million ringgit! Then again, any potential buyer may be looking at the new S-Class at this level. One definite thing that would likely tip the balance in CLS’ favour would be that often heard owner’s statement: “People always thought that I am the chauffeur whenever I drive my S-Class…”
Now, that wouldn’t happen if you were piloting the Brabus CLS B7, would it?

A sincere word of thanks is due to Mr.Danny Dato Nordin of Naza-Brabus Prai. He has since moved on to Porsche Centre Penang, Malaysia.
